For twenty years, winning on Google meant one thing: appearing among the first ten links. The user searched, scanned results, and clicked. That model is breaking. Today a growing share of queries resolve with no click at all: the person asks ChatGPT, asks Perplexity, or reads Google's AI Overview block at the very top, absorbs the written answer, and moves on.
For a B2B company this is structural, not a fad. If an industrial buyer asks an AI "what are the best B2B marketing agencies for manufacturers?" and your brand isn't in the answer, you lost the contact before it existed. No impression, no click, no way to compete. GEO is the discipline that makes sure you're in there.
SEO and GEO don't compete
The most common mistake is assuming GEO replaces SEO. It doesn't. They share about 70% of their fundamentals: a technically healthy site, clear content that answers real questions, and authority built over time. The difference is the end goal. SEO ranks your URL in a list; GEO gets the AI to pick you as a source when it writes an answer. One puts you in the shop window; the other makes the salesperson recommend you.
In practice, solid SEO is the base GEO is built on. AI engines don't invent sources: they draw on pages they already trust, on Wikipedia and Wikidata, on recognized directories and press. If your SEO is strong, you're halfway there. What GEO adds is a specific layer aimed at how machines read, understand and cite.
The four levers of GEO
1. Define your entity. AI engines reason by entities, not keywords. They need to know unambiguously who you are, what you do, where you operate and who you're associated with. That comes from structured data (Schema.org: Organization, Service), a well-populated Wikidata entry, and absolute consistency of your name, site and contact details everywhere. Listed as "Estudio Furia" in one place and "Furia Studio" in another, you're feeding the machine noise.
2. Give extractable answers. AI cites content it can lift without reinterpreting. That means answering the question directly in the first lines, using headings that are real questions, and including clean definitions and data blocks. A paragraph that opens with "GEO is…" is infinitely more citable than one that wanders before getting to the point.
3. Earn third-party citations. Perplexity and AI Overview show their sources, and they favor sites with recognized authority. Being in directories like Clutch or G2, in editorial rankings, in Crunchbase and in press makes you a source the AI validates. Speaking well of yourself isn't enough — you need trusted others to speak about you.
4. Cover the topic in depth. One article doesn't make you an authority. A body of content that covers every question in your category — what it is, what it costs, how to choose, what it compares to — teaches the AI you're a consistent reference in that territory. Topical depth beats scattering.
How it's measured (and why it's different)
There's no Search Console for AI yet. Measuring GEO is, for now, more hands-on: you ask each assistant directly about your category and industry, record whether you appear and how they describe you, and repeat over time to see the trend. Add to that the referral traffic already starting to arrive from domains like chat.openai.com or perplexity.ai in Google Analytics. It's qualitative and sampled — but it's measurable and actionable.
What to do this week
Starting from zero, the order is clear: first, sort out your entity — structured data on the site and a Wikidata entry with real references. Second, rewrite your key pages so they answer questions directly and extractably. Third, add your brand to the directories and rankings AI engines consult. Fourth, build a body of content that covers your category in depth. None of these is magic alone; together and sustained over time, they get your brand appearing where it wasn't before.
